Mortenson Awarded Dokie Wind Project By GE Energy Financial Services and Plutonic Power Corporation

January 25, 2010

Minneapolis, MN – Mortenson Canada Corporation, owned by U.S.-based Mortenson Construction, was selected by partners GE Energy Financial Services and Plutonic Power Corporation to provide engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the first phase of the Dokie Wind Project near Chetwynd, British Columbia. The project is Mortenson’s third wind power generation project in Canada.

The first phase of the Dokie Wind Project will bring 144-megawatts of clean, renewable power to the region. Mortenson will erect wind turbines and construct access roads, foundations, underground and overhead collection system, transmission line, and project substation. Construction of the wind power facility will resume this month, and it is expected to become operational in early 2011. BC Hydro will buy the power generated from the first phase of the project under a 25-year energy purchase agreement.

GE Energy Financial Services and Plutonic Power purchased the partially completed project from EarthFirst Canada, Inc. last month, and conducted a formal request for proposal process to select an EPC contractor.  The companies reviewed proposals from North America’s leading EPC firms before selecting Mortenson Canada Corporation.

"The construction of the Dokie Wind Project is truly a landmark project for British Columbia, and marks the first wind power facility that Mortenson Canada Corporation will build in the province,” said Mark Donahue, General Manager for Mortenson’s Renewable Energy Groups. “Mortenson is thrilled to join GE Energy Financial Services and Plutonic Power to bring British Columbia its largest wind power facility. The Dokie Wind Project is a significant opportunity to support British Columbia’s renewable energy goals and to build strong partnerships with British Columbia's First Nations and others in the local community."

Once all phases of the Dokie Wind Project have been completed, it will have the capacity to generate 300 megawatts, making it British Columbia’s largest wind power facility.

Since entering the renewable energy market in 1995, Mortenson has become a leading builder of wind power projects in North America.  Today, Mortenson has been involved in the construction of more than 80 wind power projects, totaling more than 8,000 megawatts across the U.S. and Canada.  Mortenson currently employs more than 2,200 people nationwide with dedicated teams to help deliver renewable energy projects to its growing list of customers.

Engineering News-Record ranked Mortenson 22nd in the 2009 Top 400 Contractors listing.  The company is ranked 11th in Power with 100 percent of this sector’s revenue coming from renewable energy.
