Mortenson Awarded IMCOM HQ at Fort Sam Houston

February 25, 2010

San Antonio, TX - The Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Mortenson's Federal Contracting Group a design-build contract for the new 168,000 square foot Installation Management Command (IMCOM) Headquarters at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. The new project involves the design and construction of a new administrative office building to support the IMCOM Command Group, which is being relocated to San Antonio from Arlington, VA. IMCOM handles installation management functions for the U.S. Army, including logistics, construction, barracks and family housing, food management, soldier and family morale, and environmental programs. This is Mortenson’s first project at Fort Sam Houston.

The Army presence in San Antonio began in 1845, with its first headquarters in the old Alamo. In 1875, the Army moved to the current Fort Sam Houston site which has grown from its original 92 acres to over 3, 000 acres in the northeast corner of the San Antonio metropolitan area. Fort Sam Houston has the distinction of being the birthplace of military aviation and currently is the largest military medical training facility in the world. In addition to the new IMCOM Headquarters, Fort Sam Houston is also home to the American Medical Command, the Brooke Army Medical Center, and the command headquarters for the Fifth U.S. Army.

The three-story IMCOM Headquarters will house just over 800 IMCOM, G-4 and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) personnel. With its light stucco walls and terra cotta tile roofs, the IMCOM Headquarters reflects the mission/Spanish colonial revival style of Fort Sam Houston. The building will be constructed on a ribbed-mat slab foundation, with CMU walls, stucco finish, clay tile mansard roof and distinguished by keystone architectural detailing and wrought iron ornamental work on the north and south side visitor entrances. It will provide open and compartmentalized office spaces, secure data networks, conference rooms, libraries, record storage, and departmental reception areas. Mullioned windows will bring natural light into the open office areas along the perimeter of each floor. Rooftop clerestories will bring natural light into light corridors on the third floor. The building has been designed to meet Department of Defense Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (ATFP) specifications and will achieve a LEED Silver certification. Construction time period is March 2010 through April 2011.
