Interview Process

Mortenson conducts an extensive interview process to ensure that we’re placing the right people in the right jobs within the organization.  We believe that every step in the interview process allows you to learn more about Mortenson as we learn more about you.

ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS
Interviewing with Mortenson team members on-campus provides you with a great opportunity to share your experience and your interest in Mortenson.  These interviews utilize behavior-based interview questions that provide you with an opportunity to rely upon your education, previous internships, and leadership experience.  During this phase, Mortenson team members are trying to determine your interest in a career in construction, your understanding of our business, and your operating group location preferences.  To prepare for your on-campus interview, be ready to discuss your leadership experience from school, work or extra-curricular activities.

SECOND ROUND INTERVIEW PROCESS
Second Round Interviews are usually the final step in our Talent Acquisition process for college students.  After you’re first interview with Mortenson, if we believe that a fit may exist between you and Mortenson and you remain interested in us, we’ll invite you to our offices for second round interviews.  If you’re coming through formal recruitment in the fall semester, the second round interviews will occur in Minneapolis in mid-November.

The Second Round Interview process provides you with an opportunity to learn more about Mortenson.  This is an opportunity for you to see Mortenson from the inside, experience our campus, and meet more team members and leaders.  During these events, we usually bring together students selected from all of the campuses that we’ve visited, allowing you the opportunity to meet other students considering Mortenson.  Also, we bring in leaders from all of our operating groups for a day of round-robin interviews, allowing students to interview with a variety of different operating groups and meet many Mortenson team members.

During this time, we also plan to have a little fun, allowing you to interact with Mortenson team members who are newer in their careers in an informal way.  The night before the interviews, the group may attend a local sporting event, have a group dinner downtown, or another fun activity.  In most cases, we also plan a visit to an active Mortenson project site, allowing you to get a look at what life on the job site involves.

We believe that these activities will give you a great introduction to Mortenson and allows you several settings to interact with our team members.  Students find that they leave knowing a lot more about Mortenson than before they arrived, and they usually return home with a very accurate picture of what a career with Mortenson entails.

AFTER THE INTERVIEWS
After the second interview process, an in-depth selection process occurs with all of the leadership involved in the interview process.  This allows for input from many different avenues and allows us to assess each student individually, discussing the best fit for each person considering your preferences and company needs.

During the formal College Talent Acquisition process, offers usually go out during the month of December.  In other circumstances, students can expect to hear back from Mortenson within about two weeks from their final interview.
