The Session of Elders and Trustees of Westminster Presbyterian Church voted on March 17, 2016, which approved plans for Open Doors, Open Futures, the church’s multi-pronged campaign to increase support for local and global needs, to expand its historic building on Nicollet Mall with an inspiring new wing designed by James Dayton Design, and to develop significant new green space surrounding the church.
The project included demolition of an 8-story 130,000 square foot office building at 1221 Nicollet Mall as well as a demolition of an existing one-story underground parking ramp to make room for a new 2-story below-grade parking ramp and a 35,000 square foot building addition. The addition is connected to the existing building and convention center skyway and has numerous sustainable design features including green roofs on the building addition and extensive green space on the redeveloped plazas along Marquette Avenue and Nicollet Mall. Also included in the project is a renovation re-programming of approximately 30,000 square feet of circulation and administrative and support space within the existing church including new staff offices, a new library, and extensive finish upgrades throughout the existing building.
