The home of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, AMSOIL Arena is located on the shores of Lake Superior. The multi-purpose venue includes seating for 6,600 fans during hockey games and more than 8,500 for local concerts, new food service areas, and private suites. Focused on the student-athlete experience, state-of-the-art locker rooms, weight room, hydrotherapy room, plyometrics area, video room and classrooms were also added to the facility.
The northern Minnesota landscape provided inspiration for the design team and challenges for the construction team. The contemporary design incorporated the Minnesota landscape with both native and renewable materials to maximize energy efficiencies. The unique waterfront location required 12 miles of pilings to support the structure and an extensive amount of sealed, exposed concrete was incorporated throughout; most of which was placed during brutal winter conditions.
The Mortenson team developed a concrete pre-placement quality plan and building information modeling was used to coordinate the structure of the facility. This eliminated rework in the field and allowed crews to build it right the first time. To that success, Mortenson delivered AMSOIL Arena one month early and under budget.
