Tell us more about your background/experience/education. What decision or path led you to the construction industry/Mortenson?

When I was younger, I always thought I’d become a teacher. In high school I completed a mentorship as an 8th grade math teacher. I later became interested in healthcare and decided to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy. In college I worked part time for a national general contractor. After graduation, I worked as an OT in a school setting and continued working with the General Contractor during my school breaks.

I was looking for a change in my career and thought I’d give myself some time to decide on my next move. I was lucky enough to find a job with Mortenson. It was close to my house and I was able to grow my skillset. I always thought I’d return to healthcare, but from the beginning, I felt at home here. I found myself working with amazing people and what I thought was going to be a temporary break turned into a new career path. You never know what life has in store for you. Just be open to the possibilities.

Tell us about your female role model or mentor that helped you grow your career. How do/did they inspire you?

I have been fortunate to have many strong female role models in my life both personally and professionally. These women have inspired and pushed me to take on challenges and to believe in myself.

I’ve learned that my voice matters and to speak up and share my ideas.

What advice would you give other women considering a career in construction or the AEC industry?

There’s never been a better time to join the industry. There’s so many opportunities.  Be willing to take risks and believe in yourself. Look for mentors who can help guide you.
