Allegiant Stadium Set to Host Super Bowl LVIII
Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium will host the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, February 11, in Super Bowl LVIII, marking the second time a Mortenson-made venue has hosted the big game (the first being Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in 2018).
From COVID-19 to providing a real grass field in the middle of the desert, the Mortenson | McCarthy joint venture team delivered the home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, both on time and under budget. "Few will actually appreciate all of the challenges the Mortenson team overcame to deliver this world-class stadium,” David Mortenson, chairman, said. “I just wish my Vikings could have played in this game!”
Tale of the Tape
- Construction: Lovingly referred to locally as the “Death Star,” the 1.8 million-square-foot facility, which covers 63 acres of land in Paradise, Nevada, was started in 2017 and finished in 2020 with zero attendees at the grand opening due to COVID-19.
- Capacity: Allegiant Stadium’s capacity will be maxed out for the big game, which will include over 65,000 fans in attendance.
- Cost: Boasting a retractable natural turf field, operable walls that open to an 80-foot-tall by 200-foot-wide view of the Las Vegas Strip, a translucent roof, 44 escalators, 2,200 TVs, 1,111 toilets, 21,000 light fixtures, and 28,000 tons of steel (heavier than the Statue of Liberty), the final cost came in at $1.65 billion.
Mortenson’s Final Score
The project team’s community outreach efforts on the project resulted in millions of dollars in contracts awarded to small, women-, and minority-owned businesses.
Education was another part of our initiative to empower businesses and workers involved in the project. The team hosted several classes and seminars through the Clark County Small Business Opportunity Program and informational sessions for the subcontractors.
Mortenson’s commitment to workforce diversity and community involvement led to the joint venture receiving a Diversity Recognition Award at the Latin Chamber of Commerce 2018 Gala.
