Mortenson Denver Team Members Volunteer More Than 1,200 Hours, $250,000 to Community Causes in 2020
Mortenson, a top-20 U.S. builder, developer, and engineering services provider with four decades of experience in Colorado, today announced that team members based in its Denver office volunteered more than 1,200 hours to community causes in 2020, a year when giving back was simultaneously more important and more difficult than ever before.
“Mortenson has always been committed to giving back to the communities where our team members live and work, but 2020 challenged our Community Impact Team in a big way,” said Gene Hodge, vice president and general manager of Mortenson Denver. “Rather than resigning to the difficulty of the situation, we re-focused our efforts and created new engagement tools with the simple goal of helping team members to achieve a greater impact than any one person could do alone. I’m incredibly proud of the way Mortenson team members met the moment and came through for one another and for our community last year.”
Over the course of the last year, Mortenson Denver team members were able to serve 46 Colorado nonprofits and donate $250,000 to local organizations.
To facilitate volunteer efforts throughout the pandemic, Mortenson’s Community Impact Team compiled a full slate of virtual volunteer activities that could be safely completed from home. Team members had access to a special online portal that allowed them to search volunteer opportunities by time commitment and category, such as mental health or diversity, equity and inclusion. Some volunteer opportunities were also kid-friendly, enabling families to participate in activities such as cleaning up the Cherry Creek Bike Trail or making blankets for Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Among Mortenson Denver’s larger efforts in 2020 was the two weeklong “Do Something Good” campaign in partnership with Mile High United Way, which ultimately benefited 22 nonprofits across the Front Range through 500 hours of volunteer efforts. All personal financial contributions made by team members during this campaign were matched by the company.
Much of Mortenson’s volunteering capitalized on team members’ skills in building and construction, such as installing a new playground for Firefly Autism, which provides services and therapies for people on the autism spectrum, or building the new Women’s Village at Clara Brown Commons, which provides a path to stable housing for women experiencing homelessness.
“The fact that community service is such a strong part of Mortenson’s culture has made a noticeable difference in our ability to keep people engaged and connected during challenging times,” said Dave Espinosa, project executive and co-chair of Mortenson Denver’s Community Impact Team. “More than anything, what this year has taught our Community Impact Team is that where the will to giveback is strong, people will find a way.”
