How and where people receive medical treatment is increasingly shifting to lower-acuity settings and telehealth, yet hospitals will always play a vital role in caring for the sickest and most vulnerable. So when Mercyhealth, which operates seven hospitals and 85 outpatient locations in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, set out to construct a new hospital amid corn fields in Rockford, Ill., its directive was bold and clear: Construct a beautiful, 100-year building that would stand the test of time, not just physically but with a design that could adapt to meet evolving patient needs, medical practices and technology.
The result: The Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic, a $505 million regional medical facility. The new medical facility was the largest-ever construction project for Rockford, Illinois’ third-largest city located 90 miles west of Chicago. The new facility, which opened to patients in January, 2019, houses the only state-designated children’s hospital in northern Illinois, a regional perinatal center with 52-bed Level III (highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Level 1 trauma center.
In designing and building the 563,000-square-foot facility made up of a 6-story, 194-bed hospital and 4-story physician clinic, Mercyhealth established several priorities to deliver an outstanding patient experience.
