Wind Innovation on Display in New Video & Podcast
Mortenson’s culture of innovation is on display in a new video feature about our South Plains II wind energy project and in the latest installment of Building What’s NextSM – The Podcast. The video tells the story of how our innovations increased safety and nearly doubled productivity over a previous installation of the massive Vestas V117 turbine, defying expectations.
Given the size of the turbine, the manufacturer workflow called for five crane picks, and for most assembly work to be done up-tower. Because of the opportunity for early collaboration with the customer, Mortenson was able to find the right technology and redefine the workflow to reduce the process from five picks down to one, save 25% of expected craft hours and save over 30,000 hours over the course of the project.
In the accompanying podcast, Mortenson Wind Energy Group Vice President and General Manager Tim Maag provides useful insight into Mortenson’s history in the industry, where he sees it going, and how innovation has driven both the vast expansion of wind energy, and Mortenson’s involvement in it.
