AC Hotel Portland Construction Update
By Kali Jeter
As spring turns to summer in the PNW, construction on the AC Hotel is concurrently heating up. The AC Hotel Portland, set to open at the end of 2016, will be the newest addition to the Portland skyline. The hotel is nearing structural completion, with the final pieces of the structure being put in place in mid-May. Framing of the first few guestroom floors has also begun, with the second and third floor already completed. The next phases of the project starting this spring include the building enclosure and interior finishes.
The AC Hotel Portland will be one of the first AC Hotel by Marriot branded hotels in the United States and will contain key pieces of local Portland art. Located on SW 3rd and Taylor, the project is approximately 120,000 square feet, 13 stories tall and features amenities such as the AC Bar and Lounge, library, meeting spaces, high tech media salons and a fitness center. Mortenson Development is working closely with Mortenson Construction and SERA Architects, McWhinney and Sage Hospitality to meet the goals for this project. It is targeting LEED Silver certification, and the design and construction teams include significant involvement from women-owned, minority-owned, and emerging small businesses.
Christian Colman, Mortenson Construction’s project manager, is already looking forward to the project’s completion. “It’s important to me that we meet all of our customer expectations and that they love the final product. We hope this is a building that the Portland community finds to be a great addition to our city,” he said.
The project is running on an accelerated schedule, with crews operating on-site for over 18 hours per day and the first team on-site daily at 4:30 a.m.
