Safety Week Helmet Drive
Mortenson San Antonio team helmet drive

In alignment with Construction Safety Week, and throughout May, our Power, Storage, Electric Vehicle, and Engineering teams held bicycle helmet drives at our project sites and offices across the country. Safety is our number one priority and a company value that we incorporate into our home lives and in our communities. Ensuring kids have access to proper safety equipment to enjoy outdoor activities, such as cycling, is a perfect opportunity to put our values into practice. Helmets keep kids safe, provide safety education, and help our youth develop safety habits that will last a lifetime.

Our project sites took the lead on this opportunity, with participation in Arizona, Texas, Minnesota, California, and Oregon, and donations to eight different organizations! Donations came from our team members as well as trade partners, demonstrating everyone’s commitment to safety and community impact. As a result, our teams donated 451 youth helmets!

Each office and site that participated chose a local organization to support. In Oregon, the team chose Project Lemonade, an organization that provides resources and opportunities to youth in foster care. Our Texas teams worked with the Woodway Family Center, City of Seymour, and Ghisallo Cycling Initiative. The team is planning to participate in an upcoming bike safety volunteer opportunity with the Woodway Family Center as they provide youth sports and recreational activities to the local community. In Phoenix and Minneapolis, our teams donated the helmets to Free Bikes 4 Kids.

Riding bikes has countless benefits for kids, communities, and the environment:

  • In addition to physical health benefits, riding bikes improves cognitive function and reduces mental illness.
  • Kids gain confidence and a sense of independence.
  • Biking results in safer, more active communities, and is a sustainable transportation method.

Team members on project sites fostered relationships with local organizations that have led to increased volunteer opportunities. Thank you to everyone who participated!
