In late April, Nebraska and Iowa were hit with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes causing damage to homes and buildings in the community. Mortenson’s Civil and Data Center teams in the area stepped in to do what they could to help in a moment of need.
As the storm hit, the team was quick to make sure that everyone was safe and accounted for. The following morning, they met at the Mortenson office to come up with a plan to action to help the local community. Our team connected with local organizations and the city council on Friday evening and Saturday morning to best focus our efforts where the community needed them most. With power line cleanup ongoing, they decided to start by collecting food and supplies to donate to people directly impacted by the storm. In partnership with local response efforts, they donated water, food, and other supplies. The community's effort filled donation sites to capacity by 2:00pm on the first day!
The towns closest to the project sites, Elkhorn & Bennington, were hit hard, with homes destroyed, trees leveled, and debris everywhere. The team collaborated with the city council to coordinate labor and equipment resources for hauling and clean-up of the area. In addition to supplying a loader, an excavator, and skid steer, Mortenson donated time and resources to organize a debris stockpile area near the local fire department and to load out the martial from trees damaged by the storm. In a nearby neighborhood, the team cleaned up and organized the debris from heavily damaged homes so that it could be taken out of the area and rebuilding efforts could begin.
We are proud of our teams in Nebraska and Iowa for stepping in to help in their local community. Thank you for your commitment to community impact and doing the right thing.
