One of the World's Largest Solar Project of its Kind

Mortenson was selected as EPC contractor to build five utility-scale solar projects over a three-year period in the San Antonio, Texas area. These projects total over 448 MWdc and are expected to generate enough electricity to power 73,000 homes.

One of these projects, Alamo 6 Solar, located in Pecos County, Texas, is one of the largest of its kind in the world at 140 MWdc. The project utilizes a dual-axis tracker system and crystalline modules. Each tracker contains 42 modules, totaling nearly 430,800 modules for the entire site.

Five 138kV substations were constructed by Mortenson to connect the project to the grid, done successfully through close coordination with multiple interconnecting utilities to ensure the individual requirements were incorporated into each project.

The unique aspects of building dual access systems presented challenges in which equipment and methods to use for this site.  At the time, all these concepts were breaking new ground for solar.
