Construction Manager at Risk

After outgrowing their previous location, Silver Cross Hospital selected Mortenson to provide construction management services for a new state-of-the-art hospital in New Lenox, IL.

The 600,000 square foot, 289-bed hospital is designed to accommodate advanced technology and to support a progressive patient care model in this growing community. Included on the new campus are a 60,000 square foot ambulatory care center (including a women’s center), a 21,000 square foot freestanding cancer center, and a 180,000 square foot medical office building. The hospital supports an interventional/procedural platform with 11 operating rooms, the latest diagnostic imaging services (including four CT scanners and two MRIs), outpatient and clinical services, an emergency department, accommodations for mobile radiology equipment, a new central plant, 39 private treatment rooms, outdoor healing garden, and a helipad. Additionally, the new facility allowed the hospital to receive an enhanced partnership with Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) has been integral to the project’s successful implementation. Critical building components—concrete, structural steel, architectural precast, and curtain wall/glazing—were modeled using BIM independently by each respective subcontractor, then combined in-house to examine constructability, fit, and tolerance. The models include all designed connections down to the embedments, anchor bolts, and precast anchors to ensure the highest quality installation.

Components include:

-289 beds designed to accommodate advanced technology and to support a progressive patient care model
-Interventional/procedural platform with 11 operating rooms, the latest diagnostic imaging services, outpatient and clinical services, emergency   department, outdoor healing garden, and a helipad
-New central utility plant
-60,000 square foot ambulatory care center including a women’s center
-21,000 square foot freestanding cancer center
-180,000 square foot medical office building
-Extensive site and infrastructure development including the construction of two intersections and a new county road

Mortenson’s use of 3D modeling to coordinate trades and allow for more shop fabrication is phenomenal...the industry is rapidly changing and Mortenson is at the forefront.
