In partnership with Ashtrom Renewable Energy, Mortenson provided complete EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracting services for the 399-megawatt Tierra Bonita solar project in Girvin, Texas. The collaboration with Ashtrom Renewable Energy was pivotal to the success of the project, fostering a highly solution-based approach from inception to execution. Ashtrom’s first solar project stateside, Tierra Bonita laid the groundwork for a lasting partnership and has set the foundation for future endeavors.
Tierra Bonita spans approximately 1,700 acres and utilizes over 600,000 Trina modules, 92 SunGrow inverters, and over 6,500 NEXTracker single-axis trackers. The Tierra Bonita project stands out for its advanced technology, including Mortenson’s largest installation of SunGrow inverters to date, expanding our diverse portfolio of technology-agnostic offerings.
Mortenson was also responsible for the civil scope of work, along with the construction of a 34.5 / 345kV substation to connect the solar project to the grid. The substation was self-performed by Mortenson and included two main power transformers, one high voltage breaker, and six medium voltage breakers.
The project’s location and the team’s efforts were crucial in maintaining high morale, demonstrating a strong commitment to community engagement through participation in philanthropic activities such as helping build, paint, and set up an entire theatre production for the Fort Stockton Community Theatre as well as partnering with the Buena Vista ISD to provide school supplies to the Buena Vista High School.
The team also collaborated with the Fort Stockton Recreation Department and donated supplies and equipment for the youth baseball / softball teams of nearly 400 athletes. Additionally, team members worked with the First Baptist Church food pantry in Fort Stockton, Texas to provide Thanksgiving care packages during the holiday season.
Tierra Bonita is a testament to what can be achieved through strong partnerships, project innovation, and a dedicated commitment to Building for the Greater Good.
Construction for the Tierra Bonita solar project began in Q1 2023 and was completed at the end of Q4 2024.
