Construction Manager at Risk

Mortenson is the leading expert for spring training facilities in Arizona. We bring innovation to the game by elevating player performance and the fan experience for the Cactus League. We bring our expert planning and programmatic benchmarking to enhance spring training facilities with cutting-edge technology in performance labs, sports medicine rehabilitation advancements, and jaw-dropping clubhouses and locker rooms.

Spring training facilities are more than just a place to practice. They can be a year-round training facility for player development, a recruiting tool to attract top talent, a space to analyze and improve player skills, a rehab center to help players recover from injuries, and a fan destination to see their favorite teams get ready for the season. Facilities are choosing to upgrade and innovate to keep up with the demands of the game, the needs of the players, and the expectations of the fans.

A Focus on Player Performance

Mortenson recently completed a 10,000 SF multi-use building renovation for the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ. The project included a multi-lane hitting and pitching performance lab that integrates state-of-the-art equipment and analytic technology to measure and enhance player performance, a flex rehab workspace, operations offices, and a 2,000 SF exterior agility field for player training activities.

Project Highlights:

  • pitching tunnels (batting cage tunnels with analytic technology for pitching and hitting)
  • flex work space for rehab
  • operations offices
  • 2,000 SF exterior agility field for player training activities

Since completing the original Camelback Ranch in 2009, Mortenson has maintained a strong relationship with both the Dodgers and the White Sox, performing five major renovations and advising on smaller projects. They look to Mortenson for programmatic planning to continue updating their facilities to enhance their fan experience and player performance.

Having previously completed the Chicago White Sox Performance Lab at Camelback Ranch, Mortenson had a fast integration with the Dodgers to deliver this most recent renovation. Based on our extensive historical cost and facility knowledge, we knew how to optimize their budget and deliver the best value. The Dodgers trusted our team to select the right trade partners, allowing us to strategically choose the best ones for the job, ultimately resulting in a project that stayed on budget.

Remaining Agile: Shifting the Design

The Dodgers, with a clear vision of excellence, collaborated with Mortenson to elevate the design of their renovation. Initially considering a simple pre-engineered metal building (PEMB), the Dodgers’ commitment to quality and innovation led them to opt for a higher functioning and aesthetic space. Mortenson, showcasing adaptability, aligned with this enhanced vision. Together, they crafted an economical custom solution that met these needs.

Completing the project before the Spring Training 2024 season was a challenge, as the team faced long lead times for steel and equipment and a utility relocation challenge. Mortenson made a plan for each obstacle and re-sequenced construction activities to keep the project moving.

The outcome of the project was a success and was delivered four weeks early, allowing an early move-in before the busy Spring Training season began. Mortenson completed the project under budget, delivering a high-quality facility that helps the Dodgers’ athletes train more effectively and perform to their highest potential. It's these types of spaces that Mortenson creates that truly bring innovation to the game!
