This 12-story Medical Tower, which will house 368 beds and state-of-the-art facilities, dramatically alters the Colby Campus and is the largest expansion project in Providence’s 100-plus-year history.
The tower’s sleek and innovative design centers on providing highly sustainable, light-filled patient and family-focused care with views of nature throughout. As patients approach the building, they can view the modern sky-high towers of the facility overlooking the Colby Campus. Upon entrance, patients meet high ceilings and a spacious lobby filled with natural lighting. The building’s design features specialized amenities throughout the facility, including oversized patient rooms, sleeper sofas, lounges, computers, kitchenettes, and playrooms. The lower levels of the facility house the emergency department floor, which includes 79 private treatment rooms, four trauma rooms, CT and diagnostic radiology services. The on-site kitchen and cafeteria serve the doctors, hospital staff, and visitors and feature several stations offering fresh food and an ample dining space for customers. The cafeteria showcases colorful glass tiled walls behind each food station, vibrant wall coverings, and a touchscreen monitor featuring daily specials and other events. Adjacent to the cafeteria is the pharmacy, gift shop, and Ascension Chapel.
The remaining floors of the medical facility house a wide range of medical services. The diagnostic imaging floor includes six imaging suites with state-of-the-art technology for CT, MRI, radiography, diagnostic and vascular ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and non-invasive cardiology services. Two of the tower’s floors integrate traditionally separate imaging labs and operating rooms to create a collegial environment, increasing efficiencies and use of resources while improving patient safety. At 700 square feet, the operating rooms are 300 SF larger than average.
The Providence Regional Medical Center project significantly catalyzes innovation and advancement in Mortenson’s Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) efforts. Through BIM, Kaizen efforts, and hard work, our project team received a temporary certificate of occupancy nearly five (5) months ahead of the contractual substantial completion date. We also finished the project with approximately $6 million in project savings.

Following the completion of the Providence Regional Cancer Center in late 2007, Providence Everett Medical Center awarded Mortenson a five-year master contract to perform small project construction services on its Colby, Pacific, Mill Creek, and Broadway campuses. The result has been a longstanding, trusting, successful partnership.
