This recreation center renovation and expansion project for the City of Lynnwood is widely supported by the Lynnwood community. The newly added private family changing rooms and ADA upgrades make the building family-friendly and accessible to everyone. The award-winning structure in Washington was a two-phase construction operation moving from a renovation to an addition.
The indoor-outdoor pool concept was maintained with an updated transparent, operable roof system while fixing issues of heat loss. A lap pool, hot tubs, water therapy pools and a recreational pool including a large waterslide and lazy river were refurbished and built to draw crowds. The upgrades drew over 10,000 visitors each week with a nearly $50,000 increase in annual pass sales and room rentals before the grand opening.
The 33-year-old facility was in need of a massive remodel with a gymnasium, multipurpose activity court, elevated walking/running track, additional exercise/fitness space, senior center, teen center, art and preschool spaces, and support facilities included in the $25M addition and renovation bringing the center to a total of 44,000 square-feet.
Significant mechanical, electrical, pool filtration and HVAC upgrades positioned the recreation center for energy savings on multiple levels. Lynwood Recreation Center received LEED silver certification, meaning that the benchmarks for sustainability and leadership were met. LEED-certified buildings save money and make a large impact on stopping climate change. Using preconstruction planning can help with deciding what upgrades and energy conservation strategies need to be done during construction to make certification possible.
